Towering high above the coast, the lighthouse offers a magnificent view of the sea and the protected nature areas, home to seals and migratory birds. It’s a place where you feel both tranquillity and grandeur, and where nature is allowed to speak its own language.

But beneath the surface, the area also hides a dark part of Denmark’s history. During World War II, Blåvandshuk was an important part of the Wehrmacht’s Atlantic Wall – a series of defense installations designed to prevent an Allied invasion.

In the dunes and forests around Oksby and Blåvand, there are still more than 50 bunkers, many of them partially hidden in the landscape.

The many bunkers remind us of a time when the area was shrouded in the dark clouds of occupation, and when church records and official registers did not always tell the whole truth.

The presence of Wehrmacht soldiers was massive. In villages like Oksby, there were more soldiers than civilians, and it changed everyday life significantly.

Locals had to live side by side with the occupying forces, and the relationship between soldiers and civilians was characterized by fear, adaptation and in some cases forbidden relations.
