Sorcery and curses in the Rundetårn, Saturday, August 6, 1639

The construction site is bustling with activity this Saturday morning, with the Round Tower now stretching over 27 meters into the sky and casting its shadow over the topped cobblestones. Work has been underway since July 7, 1637, when Christian IV personally laid the first boulder for the foundation.

After several interruptions, construction is finally underway again. It almost feels like the tower is cursed. Either bricks are missing or money is running out, which has repeatedly delayed construction.

To the northeast, the land has been prepared for the future Trinitatis Church, but right now, the area serves as storage for building materials and houses the construction office, kitchen and dining tent.

Just as the work is in full swing, a terrible accident occurs. Bricklayers Mads Sørensen and Otto Hansen fall from the top of the scaffolding together with fellow bricklayer Konrad Lauridsen. Mads Sørensen dies instantly and Konrad Lauridsen breaks his neck in the fall. Their lifeless bodies lie on the hard cobblestones.

While most people are paralyzed with shock, young kitchen maid Sidsel Pedersdatter reacts quickly. She is in love with Otto and rushes to him. Miraculously, she manages to pull him out of the rubble, and to everyone’s amazement, Otto comes to life as if Sidsel has brought him back from the dead with a single kiss.

But was it really just an accident, or are there dark, supernatural forces at work?

Almost simultaneously, King Christian’s court architect, Hans van Steenwinckel the Younger, dies suddenly in his bed, and the construction of the Round Tower is once again at risk of coming to a standstill.

Suspicion soon turns to Sidsel, who is accused of being a witch. Three deaths and a miraculous revival on the same day can hardly be a coincidence.

Christian IV, who in 1617 issued a decree against witchcraft and sorcery, is known for his strong belief in the supernatural. The King has now ordered you to investigate whether there are grounds to initiate legal proceedings against Sidsel, or whether the accident at the construction site and the court architect’s death were due to natural causes.

If Sidsel is convicted as a witch, she risks ending her days at the stake or at Byens Kag (the pillory) on Nytorv.
