You are here:Home1/Ebeltoft2/The witch hunt in Ebeltoft
The year is 1686, and for the first time in over 30 years, witches have been burned in Denmark.
At the Rugaard manor north of Ebeltoft, 41-year-old Jørgen Arenfeldt has launched a large-scale witch hunt.
One of the many accused is Mette Knudsdatter, who has neither money, influence nor power, but despite embarrassing interrogation, she maintains her innocence. In the presence of the priests, she has even made the accusation that Arenfeldt has gone mad and sees ghosts everywhere.
Mette Knudsdatter is now in the dungeon under the Town Hall in Ebeltoft, awaiting the next interrogation.
If Mette Knudsdatter is convicted as a witch, it is certain death because the law is clear:
“If any sorcerer or sorceress is found to have renounced God and his holy baptism and Christianity and devoted himself to the devil, he should be thrown alive into the fire and burned.”

BOOK NOW AND SAVE METTE KNUDSDATTER FROM THE STAKE FIRE:
It all began when Jørgen Arenfeldt arrested Mette Nielsdatter, who had escaped from Ebeltoft’s dungeon, where the bailiff of Ebeltoft, Hans Jacobsen, suspected her of witchcraft.
During the interrogation at Rugaard, Mette Nielsdatter died and was subsequently burned in Hyllested Bjerge.
This incident lit a holy fire in Arenfeldt, who then went wholeheartedly into the fight against the devil’s minions, the witches of Djursland.
Within a few months, Arenfeldt had several witches convicted, both in the birch court at Rugaard and at the High Court in Viborg.
Two weeks ago, he accused 28-year-old Anne Sørensdatter, also known as Blommen, who worked as a wise wife. She was subjected to the water test, had her hands and feet tied together and thrown into the “witch lake” at Rugaard.
She floated and was therefore accused of being a witch.
During the extrajudicial interrogations, she confessed and also identified 15 others as witches. Among them were the mayor of Aarhus Jens Rasmussen Laasbye, Widow Ingeborg Laurids Bording at the manor Ryomgård, and a tax collector in Grenå.
In addition, two aldermen’ wives in Aarhus and several peasants and poor people in Djursland were also labelled as sorcerers.
You have now been asked to assist Christian V, King of Denmark and Norway, in dealing with the extensive witchcraft accusations made by Arenfeldt.
Can you help prove Mette Knudsdatter’s innocence so she avoids the stake?
