The Chaplain and the Witch of Maribo is an outdoor escape room game inspired by real events that happened in Maribo and the surrounding area during the reign of King Christian V.

Denmark is ruled by King Christian V, who, like his predecessors, wants the country cleansed of witches, and Agnete is now in danger of being burned at the stake in the town square.

You must investigate and gather evidence to determine if Agnete is guilty of being a witch, or if she is innocent and a victim of circumstance. You’ll have to delve into the city’s intrigue, talk to witnesses, crack codes and solve puzzles to uncover the truth.

The game begins at the impressive tower of Maribo Cathedral and unfolds through the cobbled streets of the city, where the past and its secrets lurk in the shadows.

King Christian 4. issued on d. October 12, 1617 the “Ordinance against sorcerers and their accomplices” which describes how witches should be fought.

Some noblemen took on the task with almost morbid interest. Particularly concerned with witches was Jørgen Arenfeldt of the Rugård estate in Djurs Sønder Herred, who, together with the town bailiff of Ebeltoft, Hans Jacobsen, launched a crusade against witches in Djursland.

In Denmark, official witch trials continued until 1693, when Anne Palles was convicted and executed on Falster. She wasn’t burned alive, but she was first beheaded before being burned at the stake.

Officially, there have been around 2000 witch accusations, and in about half of the cases, the accused has been convicted of being a witch.

In addition, there were of course all the unofficial cases, which often took the form of vigilantism based on more or less groundless accusations and outright murder.
