The year is 1686, and for the first time in over 30 years, witches have been burned in Denmark.<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

At the Rugaard manor north of Ebeltoft, 41-year-old J\u00f8rgen Arenfeldt has launched a large-scale witch hunt.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One of the many accused is Mette Knudsdatter, who has neither money, influence nor power, but despite embarrassing interrogation, she maintains her innocence. In the presence of the priests, she has even made the accusation that Arenfeldt has gone mad and sees ghosts everywhere. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mette Knudsdatter is now in the dungeon under the Town Hall in Ebeltoft, awaiting the next interrogation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If Mette Knudsdatter is convicted as a witch, it is certain death because the law is clear:<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIf any sorcerer or sorceress is found to have renounced God and his holy baptism and Christianity and devoted himself to the devil, he should be thrown alive into the fire and burned.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n
